Review: M.A.C. makeover? :: Monday, January 30, 2012

SOoooooo~ For Christmas, I got a $50 M.A.C. gift card. I was pretty thrilled about it because I've heard such great things about M.A.C. products and I was excited to get to try some things.
My friend uses the foundation and she just absolutely raves about it, and all the girls I work with think the eyeshadow is the best EVARRR!!!

So, after work Friday, I stopped in at the M.A.C. counter with the thought that surely the staff girl can help me spend this gift card! I only had an hour because I was meeting my parents for dinner, but I really didn't think that would matter. The staff girl, named Emily, greeted me when I came up and was excited to help me! But, first she had to check in with a couple of the other customers who had just walked up and she'd be right back.

Unfortunately, after making 2-3 laps around the counter, looking at everything the place had to offer, and chatting on the phone with my mother for 20 minutes...the staff girl still hadn't gotten back to me. Not only that... but she had been doing mini make-up tutorials for women who had come up after me. \(.~.)/
Fed up, I walked up to Emily and let her know I couldn't stay any longer because I had plans. She apologized profusely saying 'I just got caught up!' and told me to come back 'tomorrow' and she would take care of me personally!

So, I came back Saturday afternoon after work. Emily was there... but honestly had no idea who I was when I first walked up. I had to explain how I'd come the day before and had a gift card, yadda yadda. She apologized again, and started taking me around to explain their products. Then informed me that, 'oh! if you use your whole gift card today, I can give you a total makeover! It only comes with a $50 purchase though, so you have to spend it all today.' lol.
Well, because I'd planned on spending the whole thing and I didn't have any makeup on (at all), I didn't mind agreeing, and why not get a total makeover!!!

So, Emily sat me down and we started chatting about what I usually did for makeup. I showed her this picture and explained that I was hoping to get some new products to replace some of the ones I'm running out of.
She told me that she totally knew what would look great on me and couldn't wait to get started. She brought over, first, some foundation. I told her that the foundation she brought over was way too dark for me, that she was probably going to have to use the lightest or 2nd lightest tone for me because my skin is really pale. She assured me that it was the right color. It... was not. AT ALL. So she had to take it off.
She had to go down to.... dun dundundun DUN! the 2nd to lightest shade. I explained to her that my face is actually a shade darker than the rest of my body and that my neck was really what needed to be matched.... (isn't that something a makeup artist is supposed to know?)

Anyway, as she continued with the makeover, we chatted about gyaru and lashes, circle lenses and Japan. She totally knew what I was talking about... well she was familiar with ganguro. I had to explain to her that it was a really old style, and that Japanese gyaru have evolved... lol.

The makeover really only took maybe 20-30 minutes. I figured that was fine because she was a professional. Right?

Well, let's just say, after she gave me the mirror... I couldn't get out of there soon enough. I ended up buying some things (I had to spend $50 after all) and then went straight home to wash my face. LOL!

So, somehow, this picture:

translated to this in Emily's mind:

I mean, I'm not wearing lenses or lashes... and I know I have one eye smaller than the other... but Emily made the problem not only more noticeable... but WORSE! She put a thicker line on the big eye... and then winged the smaller eye less. Not only that, but she barely put any mascara on my top lashes.. but spent forever on my bottom lashes. ('omg they're so long I just love playing with them' says Emily) Also, she went to town with the blush and (though you can't see it in the picture) I totally had drag-queen blush going on. It, like, arrowed right to my ears.
Plus, she didn't put any eyeshadow or eyeliner on my lower lid... though we discussed it and she walked away (for 5 minutes) to grab something that would work.... um.. scatter-brained? or did she get distracted?

Awful. So...

Customer Service: C-
I was thinking maybe a D, but really, Emily was very nice, she did apologize for getting caught up... and did "take care" of me personally when I came back.

Makeup Artist Abilities: F
After talking to her the whole time about makeup and what I was interested in and SHOWING HER A PICTURE, she completely missed the mark. What she did to my face was NOTHING that I wanted. Honestly, I don't think she listen to me at all.

Makeup quality/variety: C
The foundation was very drying and cakey before I managed to get out to my car... which is a feat within itself because I have combination to oily skin and tend to get an oily t-zone very quickly. The blush was actually quite light, even though Emily kept adding to it and adding, you still can barely see it in the picture. And, the colors in the eyeshadow were... average at best.

This might just be the counter I went to and all due to the quality of the staff. If, perhaps, I'd had a more experienced artist, or someone who actually listened, my review would be better... but this was my experience!!!

I will review the items I bought shortly. On the plus side, I really like the items I bought.

And now... pic spam. Deal with it *(^_^)*

FACE! LOL!

It was freaking gorgeous outside today! I didn't even really need a coat (I was still wearing one, mind you). And, I really enjoyed hanging out and frolicking outside!

And playing with my kittie! (he's actually biting me in the first picture, lol) His name is 'Black Jersey' See... we have another tom-cat who's name is 'Jersey' because he looks like a Jersey cow... well, because we are SO original, because Black Jersey kind of looks like a more black version of Jersey... he was named... Black Jersey. (yeah I know, lame. But that's how we roll)

Finally... soccer hurts me... a lot.

UM. Actually, I was going to write an entry very similar to this so I agree with you! I went to MAC for the first time to get my face matched with a good shade and find good lipstick, she put the primer on sloppy for my eyes and did a bad job lining my lips, like one side looked bigger than the other, I felt a little ridiculous when I wanted good help finding products I'd love.. >_< I feel like MAC counter staff isn't as knowledgeable as staff at actual MAC official stores, or I just have bad luck. :(

Your experience at MAC sounds like it really sucked! :( I know that service can be spotty at MAC stores. I live by a MAC Pro store and sometimes I get service right away, but the last time I went I had to keep flagging MUAs down but they were either off the clock or busy with people who know nothing about makeup.

I really do love MAC stuff, but they have been releasing so much shit in the last year or so that the quality has gone down a lot. My best advice for you is to try it out yourself if you can! Plus I have found with their foundations that the results depend on the method you put it on. I have found that a short headed stippling brush has been the best with applying their foundations (I use the MAC #130 brush, but it's around $40 so it's a hefty investment).

If you have to try anything from MAC, I would recommend the new "Naturally" collection that came out earlier this month. Really pretty eyeshadows (which you need to use wet for best results) and great nudy blushes, lipsticks and lipglasses :D

There isn't a professional store anywhere near where I live, so I only had the counter to choose from... so POO!
It was just altogether a disappointing experience. I have heard so many good things about M.A.C.'s products, it's a little sad to be turned off of the brand because of the quality of the store staff... but, there was nothing there that wowed me enough to make up for the poor service.
Sorry you had a similar experience!

Thank you!
Yeah, Emily might have been kind of scatter-brained... but honestly, the rest of the staff wasn't much better. (pretentious much...) I just was thoroughly unimpressed by the entire situation. Service, makeup quality, artist ability... it was all rather low. I feel like my 9 year old cousin knows more about makeup and would have given me a better makeover than that. :P

Not getting service because they're busy is one thing, not getting service because she's walked away and is helping other people who came up after you is another.

I tried some of their things and liked a couple enough to buy them... but it just seemed like basic overprice makeup to me.

Not gonna lie, I'm a drugstore makeup queen! But, what I have really works, isn't cakey, doesn't make me break out, isn't oily, etc. So, unless it is presented well and really works, I'm not going to switch over to a $35 foundation that matches my skin less. lol

I might try it again one day if they come out with something interesting, but with their selection right now, I'm not impressed.

Thank you!~~

Yeah, the makeover was a complete bust. But, in reality, it was all more or less free. So, nothing ventured, nothing gained! <3

I really like this layout!! (*___*) You look so beautiful and your lashes look phenomenal! (is that a real word? XDDD) Anyway!! You do your make-up better! I love your make-up! Too bad they didn't know what they were doing.. I also have my other eye smaller than the other, so I don't really trust anyone else doing my make-up haha XDD When I was in hairdressing school we did have some make-up lessons and everytime someone else did my make-up I look awful XDDDD Never again!
You look so cute in all of the pics ♥♥♥♥♥

I know! It's so disappointing that she didn't know what she was doing! I don't usually trust people with my hair usually, so I don't know what I trusted her with my face! LOL!
Thank you darling!

eh, useless is a little harsh. xD But, she could have done better. I'm sure there are a lot that are actually competent at their job... but I could be wrong.

I know this is really random, but I also have slightly uneven eyes. I never even noticed yours were like that until you mentioned it; your eyes always look so freaking perfect with your makeup on! Would you mind sharing your secrets? When I put on eyeliner it only seems to exaggerate that one of my eyes is more squinty than the other. lol!

Thanks!

P.S.
You and your blog are awesome! :3

Everyone has one eye smaller than the other, so don't worry. Usually, on my larger eye, I put ever so slightly more eyeliner on the top lid than I do on the smaller eye. It changes the shape of my eyes and it seems to make them look more even.
Also, I don't line completely around the entire eye so that my eyes are wider and less ROUND.
Hope that helps!
